The Azores Archipelago’s eldest references of organs and organists date from tha 16th century. However, most of the 54 that can still be found date from the end of 18th century and the beginning of the 19th.

These instruments present several plans and models of construction, embracing the Portuguese traditional manufacture besides the French and the German; made in series or with hybrid characteristics, or presenting examples of local construction following the design of the ancient instruments.

The 10 organs that make up this collection of "The Most Beautiful Organs of Portugal" were restored between 1988 and 1996, in addition to the Grand Organ of the Cathedral of Angra, built by Dinarte Machado. The collection consists of 3 CDs.

Fr. Manuel Cardoso - Tulerunt Lapides

I believe it is the first digital edition of Fr. Manuel Cardoso's motet Tulerunt Lapides, published in the 1648 Livro de Varios Motetes..., printed in Lisbon by Pedro Craesbeeck.

Cardoso's motet is scored for five voices (SATTB). Original pitch and original note values were kept in this edition.

This work was recorded by various ensembles. It appears in Westminster Cathedral Choir's (directed by James O'Donnell) recording Masterpieces of Portuguese Polyphony. The motet is also featured in Harry Christopher's The Sixteen recording devoted to Manuel Cardoso, re-issued later as Renaissance Portugal: Sacred Music of Cardoso and Lôbo. Recently, Portuguese Vocal Ensemble, (dir. Vasco Negreiros) has recorded a 3-cd set of Cardoso's whole Livro de Varios Motetes... .

Houve um tempo no qual Alberto Nepomuceno foi considerado “Pai da música brasileira” ou compositor oficial da “república musical” brasileira. Isto poderia ser o suficiente para assegurar-lhe lugar no panteão das figuras fundamentais da nossa história musical. Entretanto, sua importância tem sido relativizada pela tradição ideológica pós Semana de Arte Moderna, que o considera um pré-nacionalista acriticamente tributário às correntes estéticas europeias. No entanto, o aprofundamento nas concepções estético-ideológicas de sua época, traz um novo enfoque tanto para as suas orientações modernistas, nunca consideradas, quanto às nacionalistas, pouco valorizadas. Este é o propósito aqui apresentado: demonstrar como Alberto Nepomuceno absorveu, interpretou e expressou em suas obras o seu vínculo ao modernismo musical e, consequentemente, seu pertencimento ao nacionalismo musical.

Alonso Lobo’s 'Versa Est in Luctum'

Last couple of days I was preparing the edition of Alonso Lobo’s Versa est in Luctum (for 6 vv.). The direct contact with this work reminded me of the great achievements of these Iberian composers, of the contrapuntal design and expressiveness one can extract from these works. The powerful emotions you get when you hear and work on the musical text cannot be compared to actually perform this work. I hope to sing it one day.

Lobo’s setting of the funeral motet Versa Est in Luctum was written for the funeral rites of the powerful Spanish ruler King Philip II (in 1598), being published in the composer’s Liber Primus Missarum (Madrid, 1602) with the title “Ad exequias Philip. II Cathol. Regis Hisp.”. The comparison to Tomás Luis de Victoria’s setting is inevitably. Victoria's setting of Versa Est in Luctum was written five years later for the funeral of Philip’s sister Dowager Empress Maria, in 1603. This motet is incorporated in one of the masterpieces of late Renaissance music: the Officium Defunctorum a 6 (1605).

Few aspects of late nineteenth-century and subsequent cultural developments remain untouched by Wagner’s influence. Together with Francisco Guerrero's, Tomás Luis de Victoria's double-choir setting of the Ave Maria (the only one actually by him) is probably one the Ave Maria settings from Iberian composers which I like more (although D. Pedro de Cristo's setting is also sumptuous).

This eight-voice setting closes his first publication, the 1572 Motecta (Venice at Angelo Gardano) is intended for the Feast of the Annunciation. It must of been one of Victoria's favorites for he published it, together with an organ part, in an anthology, published in Madrid in 1600. The music begins with the same passage, which brilliantly exposes an allusion to the plainchant melody in the upper voice, is sung by the two choirs in turn. The music is colored by accidentals (e-flat against f-sharp), continuing this expressive use of accidental and utterly a diminished fourth (b-flat down to f-sharp), one of Victoria's melodic gestures.

"One of the world’s greatest harpsichordists, and an artist who inspired many generations of musicians, Gustav Leonhardt, has died. He had only last month announced his decision to retire from public performance after a concert in Paris due to ill-health.

As well as a keyboard-player of rare distinction (he played the harpsichord, pipe organ, claviorganum, clavichord and fortepiano), Leonhardt was also celebrated as a conductor, teacher and scholar.

He studied in Basel at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, working with Eduard Müller for the harpsichord and organ. He later moved to Vienna and started to make a name for himself as a harpsichordist. He was appointed professor of harsichord at the Academy of Music there before returning to his native Amsterdam to take up a similar role at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He was a pioneering recording artist – the early 1950s saw major first recordings from him of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue." - Grammophone

God's Composer: Tomás Luis de Victoria is the title of a documentary that was aired on BBC 4, which focuses on the life and music of Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria. It is narrated by Simon Russell Beale (Sacred Music series) and the musical performance is by The Sixteen leaded by Harry Christophers.

The documentary's title seems a bit "commercial". Although we only know sacred works by Victoria the term "God's composer" seems to me a bit exaggerated.

The title of this post comes from a blog entry I found at the Naxos Blog. Although it is more an advertise to the state-of-the-art e-books published by this label, the first paragraphs contain some interesting thoughts on the concept of the "book about music" that I think is worth sharing.

Since I'm a fan of the concept "e-book" I cannot be indifferent to the appealing design of these new products. Formats like EPUB or MOBI begin to grow on the market. But, although they look very appealing, I still like the "page-format" of the good old pdf or (like the image on the right) formats that still keep the idea of the "book page format".

Just found this video, Jean Mouton's motet Nesciens Mater a8, in one of the blogs I follow. It's quite a masterpiece in construction and invention, celebrating the Holy Virgin and the birth of Christ. Here in an excellent performance by The Monteverdi Choir.

"Nesciens mater virgo virum, mingles the Virgin's transendence and her fleshly presence. It claims she brought forth Christ without the human pains of childbirth, calls him the "eternal king of angels" taking "heavenly milk"; nevertheless, it calls forth this very human image of a child nursing at the breast of His mother. Jean Mouton, court composer to the French Royal Chapel, set this antiphon text in an eight-part motet. It, too, breathes both human grace and superhuman abstraction.

This is a photo of one of the last concerts of Ensemble Vocal Manuel Mendes (EVMM) in which I participated. June 2011 was the end of a cycle of singing fantastic music with fantastic university colleagues. EVMM had a series of concerts during that month in a sort of “farewell tour” for the members who graduated. We did two of Clément Janequin’s descriptive chansons, Le Chant des Oiseaux and La Guerre(being the last one an edition I prepared specially for the ensemble), a series of madrigals from Thomas Morley’s First Book of Madrigals and a couple more madrigals and chansons by composers like Orlando di Lasso, Claudin de Sermisy, Orlando Gibbons, Cipriano de Rore among others.

Fr. Manuel Cardoso - Requiem

Huelgas Ensemble released a disc, called Tears of Lisbon, in order to illustrate what they perceive as a pervasive melancholy in Portuguese music. Appropriately for a requiem, Cardoso [who died 24 November 1650] fulfils that characterization in a music that is yet aware of blissful states beyond earthly concern. The style of his music draws largely on Palestrina, but is more eloquent in its articulation of subtle, complex emotions. While not exhibiting the same eccentricity of gesture, he achieves a individuality and harmonic richness at least as impressive as Gesualdo's. The Introitus begins with a clear signal that this is not the neatly pious world of Palestrina: the soprano sings an augmented third against the tenor. An almost suffocating richness dominates the entire piece, that, despite the rhythmic plainness of the parts, suggests emotional realms beyond the music's capacity to express. What makes it more striking is how tightly, and securely on this side of that perceived realm it remains. Cardoso is no sufi, but he seems to know what they're going through. For the modern listener, he provides armchair mysticism at its best.

New Project

This is one of the musicological projects in which I will be involved for the next times. It came unexpectedly in the form of an invitation from a former teacher at UÉ. Although the image only shows a weight, this is a project concerning the research on instrumental music in Portugal in late 16th- and 17th century, focusing in a particular manuscript. I'll will be joining a team of musicologists that include former colleagues at UÉ.

For me, this a new musicological adventure for I’m not very familiar with instrumental music sources, although instrumental music thought at that time was strongly connected to that of vocal music. It will be a challenge for me to study these sources that, I hope, will be a breakthrough in the study of instrumental music in Portugal. I’m most thankful for this invitation, hoping that I’ll be able to correspond efficiently to this challenge.

Next Saturday I’ll be playing Antero Ávila’s Te Deum at Auditório do Ramo Grande (Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island). This time I will not be singing but playing clarinet.The Te Deum is presented in this concert in a version for choir and wind ensemble. For me it's a very special return to my amateur clarinet playing. I've putted the clarinet aside when I entered Musicology at University of Évora.

Thomas Kelly - Early Music: A Very Short Introduction

From Gregorian chant to Bach's Brandenburg Concerti, the music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods is both beautiful and intriguing, expanding our horizons as it nourishes our souls. In this Very Short Introduction, Thomas Forrest Kelly provides not only a compact overview of the music itself, but also a lively look at the many attempts over the last two centuries to revive it. Kelly shows that the early-music revival has long been grounded in the idea of spontaneity, of excitement, and of recapturing experiences otherwise lost to us--either the rediscovery of little-known repertories or the recovery of lost performing styles, with the conviction that, with the right performance, the music will come to life anew.

Blending musical and social history, he shows how the Early Music movement in the 1960s took on political overtones, fueled by a rebellion against received wisdom and enforced conformity. Kelly also discusses ongoing debates about authenticity, the desirability of period instruments, and the relationship of mainstream opera companies and symphony orchestras to music that they often ignore, or play in modern fashion.

This was quite an interesting discovery in YouTube for several reasons. First, the fact that Lorenzo Coppola is using a basset clarinet, a replica of what Anton Stadler (who premiered the Concerto in Prague on 16 October 1791) played. Second, this interpretation (historical) is fantastic, for it shows a "classical perspective" of the work itself, rather than the majority of 20th century interpretations that quite often sound like - and excuse me for this rough expression - "a gorilla playing with China porcelain". This a delicate work and Coppola shows very well its delicacy. Third, "that sound" of the basset clarinet shows an ambiance together with the orchestra that you can't hear with a large orchestra and a 19th century interpreter.

The second cd comprising the seven cantigas from the Sharrer source. In my opinion this is a "not so well" attempt by Paul Hillier. That english accent is too present in the galego-portuguese language. This is the first recording of D. Dinis' cantigas since they were founded in the portuguese national archives - Torre do Tombo - at Lisbon, by Harvey Sharrer.

«Of all the musical forms and traditions, the song - a text with a melody and rhythmic structure - is the most enduring. Its adaptability to every language, subject, and social and economic group, as well as its portability has assured its presence to virtually every aspect of human life. From songs, we gather valuable information about the people of a particular time and place. Of Clarinet, Singing... and Polyphony

Since my arrival at Terceira island, I started to play clarinet again. Since I left Terceira (in 2006) I haven’t played it with the desirable frequency. It’s great to “remember” some of the repertoire that I studied at the Conservatory: Krommer’s Concerto Op. 36, Weber and Debussy, among others. I’m a big fan of late 18th-century clarinet repertoire. The majority of clarinettists tend to mid-19th- and 20th-century works but I generally prefer those post-mozartian works. This might be a more musicologist or a historical-performance-practice-fan approach rather than a clarinettist but, the music of this period combines a very cantabile style with some technical passages (don’t forget the clarinets used in late 18th-century music), and I prefer it to the virtuoso-style 19th-century music, in which the instrumentalist has to play “1.000 notes per minute”.

The 18th edition of Laus Polyphoniae leads music lovers to Portugal. In an edition brimming with cantigas, vilancicos and cançoes we engage on a quest for the soul of Lusitanian music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early baroque. Cities such as Lisbon, Porto and Évora yield up their musical sources, while top composers such as Manuel Cardoso and Duarte Lobo get pride of place. You will hear music by Portuguese kings, but also by anonymous composers who temporarily sank into oblivion. Thus the festival programme will be steeped in that unique lovely, yet concurrently bitter, southern melancholy atmosphere that is so characteristic of the country of amor and saudade.

Several of my friends will be playing at this festival which features music from Portugal.

I just viewed the first season of BBC's Sacred Music.

This is a wonderful documentary is the first season of a series with 4 episodes each, narrated by Simon Russell Beale with the musical support of The Sixteen and Harry Christophers. The first is The Gothic Revolution. second Palestrina and the Popes, third Tallis, Byrd and the Tudors, and the forth Bach and Lutheran Legacy.

There is also a second season (of also 4 episodes) on more "contemporary" sacred music, featuring music of Arvo Pärt among others.

Peter Jeffery - Re-Envisioning Past Musical Cultures: Ethnomusicology in the Study of Gregorian Chant

Studying Gregorian chant presents many problems to the researcher because its most important stages of development were not recorded in writing. From the sixth to the tenth century, this form of music existed only in song as medieval musicians relied on their memories and voices to pass each verse from one generation to the next.

Peter Jeffery offers an innovative new approach for understanding how these melodies were created, memorized, performed, and modified. Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology and ethnomusicology, he identifies characteristics of Gregorian chant that closely resemble other oral traditions in non-Western cultures and demonstrates ways music historians can take into account the social, cultural, and anthropological contexts of chant's development.

The Spanish polyphonist Tomás Luis de Victoria (Ávila, 1548-Madrid, 1611) holds an important place among composers of all time. Trained as a musician at the Cathedral of Ávila, his enriching stay in Rome (1567-1585) put him in contact with a wide variety of personalities and institutions: his close personal and professional relationship with Palestrina, the Collegium Germanicum, the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, the various papal spheres, etc. His works are devoted to the highest figures of the Church and Royalty: to Pope Gregory XIII, several cardinals (among whom we should emphasize Prince Cardinal Albert), King Philip II, King Philip III and Princess Margaret, daughter of the Empress Mary, and sister of Philip II. Upon his return from Rome, he would be appointed chaplain of this Empress and organist at the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales at Madrid.

He attempted to document the ways in which music-making expresses the human condition, how it transcends social divisions, and how it can be used to improve the quality of human life.

This volume brings together in one convenient source eight of Blacking's most important theoretical papers along with an extensive introduction by the editor. Drawing heavily on his fieldwork among the Venda people of South Africa, these essays reveal his most important theoretical themes such as the innateness of musical ability, the properties of music as a symbolic or quasi-linguistic system, the complex relation between music and social institutions, and the relation between scientific musical analysis and cultural understanding.

Victoria 400

A good friend of mine, singer and conductor Pedro Teixeira, is part of this quite interesting project: Victoria 400. According to the description on the site «Victoria 400 is a private initiative led by the conductor Peter Phillips (The Tallis Scholars), the composer Ivan Moody, the conductor Pedro Teixeira and the singer Jordi Abelló. Their aim is to promote and create interest amongst singers and conductors in renaissance and contemporary music by means of choral courses. This new venture takes its name from Tomás Luis de Victoria, who died in 1611. He was one of the most renowned composers of the Renaissance and we have decided that his name would be an appropriate emblem for our project.»

This first project will be held at Barcelona, 7-11 September 2011.

I Ibero-American Meeting for Young Musicologists

Presentation

The first Ibero-American meeting for young musicologists intends to promote the circulation of information in the field of musicology among young musicologists and students of musicology, through a symposium to be held between 22 and 24 February 2012 in Lisbon, which will count with the participation of renowned personalities in the scenarios of musicology and ethnomusicology in Portugal.

The meeting is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in Music and Musicology, MMus and Master students in Musicology, doctoral students and recent PhDs (up to three years) that may participate with a 20 minute conference or poster presentations on any topic related to musicology, both Ibero-American and international. The meeting also intends to hold three concerts with ensembles or soloists who are taking part on the event, and who intend to perform works related to the topics of their researches. The abstracts of the meeting will be published online, and some of the papers will be chosen by the scientific board to be published on a paper version.

The Scientific Board is composed by Doctors, Doctoral students and Master from Portugal, Brazil, Spain and the United States and counts with the support of the Palácio Foz and the Latin American House of Lisbon.

Call for Papers

Proposals are very welcome both for conferences of 20 minutes and the presentation of posters on any topic related to Ibero-American or International Musicology and Ethnomusicology.

Proposals should be approximately 300 words and can be sent by email (musicologiacriativa@gmail.com) to the Organizing committee of the First Ibero-American Meeting for young Musicologists until October 31st 2011. Please, indicate your complete name, institutional affiliation, postal address and email address. The acceptation of proposals will be announced individually by email from the 6th of December 2011.

Conferences and posters can be presented in Portuguese, Spanish or English.
